Summer fun in Maine

What could be sweeter than a summer road trip to Maine, going with your good friends! We headed out on a road trip to Maine this July with the Melmoth family to enjoy some ocean side camping and to put our first major long haul on the recently acquired tent trailers. Our first destination was Old Orchard beach, we camped at Wild Acres, not really all that wild but a nice family campground only a 5 minute bike ride from the ocean. Old Orchard beach is fantastic with great sand and awesome waves. The kids spent hours building sand castes and playing in the beautiful waves. Water was chilly but fun, skim boarding and boogie boarding were a blast on this stretch of the Maine coastline.

The amusement park right beside the ocean was a huge hi with young and old alike. The kids all did their first "big kid" rides and sampled a pile of "carny" food. Our next camp site was in Bass Harbour located on Mount Desert Island, we stopped for lunch in Freeport and a look around LL Bean on our drive to Bass Harbour. Bass Harbour is a nice working harbour and the location of a beautiful lighthouse, camping was more rustic but the facilities were fine. Highlight of the trip was a whale watching excursion that took us off shore about 20 miles, we saw several whales and were entertained by the number of folks who were seasick. Managed to have a nice big lobster dinner before we headed for home. More photos here.
